Mt. St. Helens

I drove up from Portland in October of 2005.  The shots are from the various visitors centers and roads.  The long bridge is 2300 ft long and 300ft down.  

Notice the valleys are full of grey/black dirt - These are parts of the pyroclastic flow from the volcano.  It layered the valley up to 600 ft deep!  There is fresh growth on top.  The major eruption took place 25 years ago - May 18th, 1980.  It was a dreary rainy day so I could not see the volcano.   I was at the Johnston Observatory (5 miles away) - there is  a picture of a diorama indicating where I was vs the volcano.

Had it been better weather I would have seen this....
